What the forklift course covers and who it is for
The course trains you to operate a counterbalanced forklift safely and to the standard the Driven Machinery Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act expect of a licensed operator. By the end of the course you will be able to:
- carry out a pre-use inspection and log defects before you start;
- read the load chart and stay inside the rated capacity and load centre;
- explain the stability triangle and why a raised or off-centre load tips a forklift;
- pick up, travel with, stack and destack loads in aisles, on ramps and inside trucks;
- refuel or charge a battery safely;
- park, shut down, hand over and report incidents correctly.

How much is forklift training, and what does the price include?
For most learners a forklift licence costs R1,200 (F1) or R1,700 (F2) — the classes covering machines used in most warehouses and factories. The fee covers theory and learner material, practical hours on the forklift, both assessments, and the licence and certificate issued once you are found competent.
The F2 + Reach truck combo at R4,200 suits anyone heading for a racked warehouse, where both machines are in daily use. Companies can ask for a group rate on WhatsApp. Every course is listed on the machines courses price list.
Duration, daily schedule and assessment
A new licence takes 3–5 days; how quickly you pick up the machine decides which, and most first-time operators use all five. A renewal is 1 day. Where a company’s operators already drive and only need to be licensed, recognition of prior learning (RPL) assesses what they can do in 1–3 days — the difference between losing a shift and losing a week. New intakes start every day: pick your start day, confirm on WhatsApp and arrive with your ID.

What a training day looks like
Training runs on weekdays from 08:00, finishing between 13:00 and 15:00. Theory is taught on the first morning and in short briefings before each practical block; the rest of the time you are on the forklift, rotating through inspection, driving, load handling and stacking. The 20/80 split is deliberate: employers care whether you can place a pallet on the third level of racking without hitting the upright.
How you are assessed
On the last day you write a theory test on legislation, machine parts, load charts and safe-operating rules, then an assessor observes a full practical cycle: pre-use inspection, driving with and without a load, stacking and destacking, and shutdown. You must be competent in both. If you are not yet competent in one part you get feedback and can be re-assessed; ask about the arrangement when you register.
Entry requirements
The requirements are simple so that the course is open to people without a matric or a car driver's licence. Bring the originals on your first day.
- Minimum age: 16 years.
- Identity document: a valid South African ID or passport. Your licence is issued in the name on it.
- Literacy: you must be able to read basic instructions and load charts and follow spoken instructions in English. Grade 9 is the floor — the unit standard assumes Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2. No matric is required, for this or any of our machine courses.
- Physical ability: you must be able to climb on and off the machine, look over your shoulder while reversing and work a full practical day.
- Clothing and PPE: closed shoes and clothing you can work in. Safety boots and a high-visibility vest are brought by the learner.
- Driver's licence: not required. A forklift licence covers operating the machine on private premises, not public roads.
- Renewals only: bring your current or recently expired forklift licence.
Unit standard, NQF level and accreditation numbers
The forklift course is delivered against SAQA unit standard 242974, Operate counter-balanced lift truck — NQF level 3, 7 credits. The four classes in the table above are the unit standard’s own, not our pricing bands. Your certificate states the unit standard title and number, which is what a safety officer or auditor checks as proof of operator competence. You can look the unit standard up on the SAQA website.

Your forklift licence: what you get, how long it is valid and how to renew
You receive three documents: an operator licence card valid for two years, a certificate of competence, and a recommendation letter you can hand an employer as a reference for the skills assessed. Most learners leave with all three on the day they finish; otherwise a new licence follows within 24 hours, a renewal within 4 hours.
The licence shows your name, class (F1 to F4), issue and expiry dates. All three are verifiable on this site, so an employer can confirm them in seconds. Renewals are done by Wheelset Academy.
A forklift licence is valid for 24 months. Diarise the expiry date: an operator with a lapsed licence is unlicensed in the eyes of an inspector, and the employer carries the liability. Renewal is a 1-day course at R500 (F1), R600 (F2) or R700 (F3 and F4), at either campus or on site.
Forklift licence vs forklift certificate
People mean the same course. The certificate records that you were assessed as competent against the unit standard; the licence is the operator card a safety officer asks to see, renewed every 24 months. Neither is a driving licence: under the Driven Machinery Regulations the employer must ensure you are competent, and these are the evidence.

Forklift operator pay depends on industry, machine class and whether you are employed directly or through a labour broker. Indeed South Africa reports an average of R9,966 a month, from 210 salaries reported, updated July 2026. Treat that as a midpoint. Is a forklift certificate the same as a forklift licence?
They are issued together but do different jobs. The certificate records that you were assessed as competent against the unit standard. How long is a forklift licence valid, and how much is the renewal?
A forklift licence is valid for 24 months from the date of issue. Renewal at Wheelset Academy takes 1 day and costs R500 for F1, R600 for F2 and R700 for F3 or F4. Book your renewal before the expiry date and bring your current or recently expired licence with you.
Do I need a driver's licence to do forklift training?
No. A car driver's licence is not required, because a forklift licence covers operating the machine on private premises such as a warehouse, yard or factory floor, not driving on public roads. You do need a valid ID, to meet the minimum age, to follow written and spoken instructions, and to be physically able to operate the machine safely.
Which forklift class should I choose: F1, F2, F3 or F4?
Pick the class that matches the heaviest forklift you expect to drive. F1 covers machines up to 3,000 kg and suits most warehouses and retail stockrooms. F2 (up to 7,000 kg) is the common choice for manufacturing, freight and building supplies. F3 (up to 15,000 kg) and F4 (over 15,000 kg) are for container yards, steel, timber and heavy industry. Can my company book on-site forklift training?
Yes. Wheelset Academy trains groups at the client's premises, usually on the client's own forklifts, so your operators learn on the machines and in the aisles they use every day.
