Why do you need forklift training?

Additionally, forklift operators play a crucial role in improving the company’s stocking process by efficiently moving goods from one area to another. To ensure successful inventory management for the company, it is essential for operators to familiarize themselves with the warehouse’s stocking procedures. Loading and unloading stock from trucks using forklifts is a vital skill for every forklift operator. Throughout this process, operators need to identify potential hazards, such as loose loads, and take care to center the weight of the forklift load as much as possible, all while remaining aware of the maximum load weight the forklift can handle. By adhering to these practices, forklift operators contribute significantly to the smooth and safe operation of the warehouse and its inventory management.

What you'll learn — day by day

Every Wheelset Academy graduate covers all 9 themed modules across the duration of their course. Theory and practical fully blended — 80% practical hours on real working forklifts, not simulators.

MODULE 1

Health, Safety & Legal Framework

Understand the Occupational Health & Safety Act 85 of 1993, Driven Machinery Regulations 18 of 2015, SANS 10400 site safety standards, and your operator legal duties. Learn how to identify hazards, select appropriate PPE, and act on near-miss incidents. Covers employer duties under Section 8 and operator duties under Section 14.

MODULE 2

Forklift Components & Hydraulics

Walk through every component of a forklift: mast, carriage, forks, counterweight, hydraulic system, fork-positioner, side-shifter, tilt and lift controls. Understand the hydraulic circuit — reservoir, pump, valves, cylinders. Learn the differences between LPG, diesel and electric forklifts and when each is appropriate.

MODULE 3

Pre-Operational Inspection

Master the 47-point daily checklist legally required before operating any forklift: tyres, forks, mast, hydraulic lines, horn, lights, brakes, data plate, capacity chart, log-book entry. Identify hydraulic leaks, tyre wear thresholds, and signs of fork fatigue. Practise reading the manufacturer's data plate and capacity chart.

MODULE 4

Stability & Load Centre

Learn the physics behind every safe lift: fulcrum, centre of gravity, the stability triangle, fore-aft and lateral stability. Calculate de-rating factors when using attachments. Understand how load centre, mast height, and tilt affect maximum capacity. Practise on-screen and on-machine load calculations until they become instinct.

MODULE 5

Operational Skills & Manoeuvring

Practical day. Loaded and unloaded travel. Pallet engagement and retrieval. Stacking and de-stacking on 2-tier and 3-tier racking. Loading and offloading delivery vehicles. Travel speeds, blind corners, ramp gradients, three-point turns, pedestrian segregation and reversing protocols. By end of day 3 you'll have racked and de-racked over 100 pallets.

MODULE 6

Hazard Recognition & Emergency

Pedestrian and vehicle interaction protocols. Tip-over recovery (the only correct procedure: stay strapped in, brace against the steering wheel, lean away from the fall direction). Fire, fuel and battery emergencies. LPG cylinder leak response. Lithium-ion thermal runaway. Incident reporting under DMR 18 (11). Includes 3 scenario-based drills.

MODULE 7

Refuelling, Charging & Battery Safety

Diesel and LPG refuelling lockout protocols. Lead-acid battery exchange and charging room ventilation requirements. Lithium-ion safety and fire suppression. Spillage containment. Hot-work permits in fuel/charging areas. Required PPE for each fuel type. Compliance with SANS 10089 (flammable liquids) and SANS 10238 (LPG handling).

Final Assessment

Practical & Theory Assessment

40-question written theory paper (pass mark 70%). Yard practical course: pallet pick-up from floor, racking placement at height, narrow-aisle navigation, ramp work, parallel parking, log-book closure. Independent moderator evaluates competency against SAQA Unit Standard 242974 outcomes. Certificate of Competence and 2-year licence card issued same day on success.
