What the excavator course covers and who it is for

The course trains you to operate a tracked hydraulic excavator safely and to the standard the Driven Machinery Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act expect of a licensed operator. By the end you will be able to:

• carry out a pre-use inspection and log defects before you start;
• read the load chart and work inside the machine's rated capacity and reach;
• track on and off a low-bed, on gradients and over uneven ground;
• dig a trench to line and level, batter a slope and load a truck from a stockpile;
• work safely around services, excavation edges, pedestrians and other plant;
• park, shut down, hand over and report incidents correctly.

The prices below are the full course fee per learner at both campuses.

What the price includes

The fee covers theory and learner material, machine hours, both assessments, and the licence and certificate. There is no separate charge for the card, the certificate or registration. Accommodation for learners travelling in from outside Gauteng is available from R300 a week and is not included.

Renewal, RPL or a full course — which one do you need?

Most people asking about price are really asking this. The answer depends on what you can show us, not on when you first learned. Find yourself in the first column.

The three-month rule, and why it matters more than the price

A licence that lapsed more than three months ago cannot be renewed. Not by us, not by anyone — the operator has to be trained and assessed again. What that costs depends on what you can still do: an operator who has been on the machine the whole time and simply let the card lapse is assessed and quoted accordingly, while someone who has not touched an excavator in two years repeats the programme. The quote is never more than the full course fee — it exists to charge you less than R4,500 where your experience allows, not more.

Diarise your expiry date. Renewing on time is one day and from R1,000. Letting it run four months late puts you back into assessment, and every year we see people arrive expecting a one-day renewal because nobody told them the date mattered.

RPL costs the same as the course. It buys time, not money

Recognition of prior learning is R4,500, the same as training from scratch, because it is a full competency assessment rather than a discount. What it saves is time on the machine: 1–3 days instead of 1–2 weeks. For one person that is convenience. For a company with six operators already working unlicensed, it is the difference between losing a few shifts and losing your earthworks crew for a fortnight — which is why most of our group bookings are RPL rather than courses.

Send a photo of the licence, or tell us the expiry date and how recently you have operated, and we will tell you which of the five above applies and what it costs before you travel to a campus. The two published figures are the anchors: R1,000 for a renewal, R4,500 for the full course. Nothing we quote sits above them.

Duration, daily schedule and assessment

A new licence takes 1–2 weeks, depending on how quickly you pick up the machine and whether you are taking a combo.

Training runs on weekdays from 08:00, finishing between 13:00 and 15:00. Theory is taught on the first morning and in short briefings before each practical block; the rest of the time you are on the machine with an instructor, rotating through inspection, tracking, trenching, slope work and truck loading. The split is roughly 20% theory and 80% practical, and we cap the group at five learners per instructor so nobody spends the day watching.

How you are assessed

On the last day you write a theory test on legislation, machine components, load charts and safe-operating rules, then an assessor observes a full practical cycle: pre-use inspection, tracking, a trench dug to line and level, loading a truck, and shutdown. You must be competent in both. If you are not yet competent in one part you get feedback and can be re-assessed; ask about the arrangement when you register.

Entry requirements

The requirements are simple so that the course is open to people without a matric or a car driver's licence. Bring the originals on your first day.

• Minimum age: 16 years.
• Identity document: a valid South African ID or passport. Your licence is issued in the name on it.
• Literacy: you must be able to read basic instructions and load charts and follow spoken instructions in English. Grade 9 is the floor — the unit standard assumes Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2. No matric is required, for this or any of our machine courses.
• Physical ability: you must be able to climb on and off the machine, work the controls seated for a full day and look around you while slewing.
• Clothing and PPE: closed shoes and clothing you can work in. Safety boots and a high-visibility vest are brought by the learner.
• Driver's licence: not required. An excavator licence covers operating the machine on site, not driving it on a public road.
• Renewals only: bring your current or recently expired excavator licence.

Unit standard, NQF level and accreditation numbers

The excavator course is delivered against SAQA unit standard 262744, Operate an excavator — NQF level 2, 15 credits. Your certificate states the unit standard title and number, which is what a safety officer or auditor checks as proof of operator competence. You can look it up on the SAQA register.

Your excavator licence: what you get, how long it is valid and how to renew

You receive three documents: an operator licence card valid for two years, a certificate of competence, and a recommendation letter you can hand an employer as a reference for the skills assessed. Most learners leave with all three on the day they finish; otherwise a new licence follows within 24 hours, a renewal within 4 hours.

The licence shows your name, the machine class, issue and expiry dates. All three are verifiable on this site, so an employer can confirm them in seconds. Renewals are done by Wheelset Academy.

An excavator licence is valid for 24 months. Diarise the expiry date: an operator with a lapsed licence is unlicensed in the eyes of an inspector, and the employer carries the liability.

Day-by-day curriculum

This is the standard programme for a new licence. Your instructor may reorder the practical blocks, but the content and the final-day assessment do not change.

1. Day 1

   Induction and site rules; Occupational Health and Safety Act and Driven Machinery Regulations; duties of operator and employer; excavator types, components and hydraulics; load charts, rated capacity and reach; stability and centre of gravity; pre-use inspection and defect reporting

2. Days 2–3

   Mounting and dismounting; seat belt and controls; start-up and shutdown; tracking forward, reverse and turning; slewing with an empty and a loaded bucket; bucket and boom control without a load; travelling on gradients and uneven ground

On the 1-day renewal you cover the Day 1 legislation and inspection content as a refresher in the morning, then practical revision and the assessment in the afternoon.

Excavator, TLB or front end loader — which licence do you need?

These three machines are confused more often than any others, and picking the wrong course costs a week and a course fee. They are separate unit standards and separate licences.

A job advert that says "plant operator" without naming the machine usually means the employer wants more than one licence — plant-hire firms keep the operators they can move between machines.

What the excavator is assessed on that the others are not

Two things separate the excavator assessment. The first is slew control with a loaded bucket — the machine's centre of gravity moves as the house rotates, which is where inexperienced operators tip machines. The second is digging to line and level: a trench that is out of level has to be re-dug, and on a pipeline that is expensive. Most of the practical time goes into those two things rather than into driving the machine around.

International students: excavator training in South Africa

Wheelset Academy trains operators from across Sub-Saharan Africa, not only South Africans. A valid passport is accepted in place of a South African ID, and your licence and certificate are issued in the name on it. No matric is required and no driver’s licence is required.

• Civil construction and roadworks — bulk earthworks, trenching for services, pipe laying.
• Plant hire — operators supplied with the machine, the most common route into steady work.
• Mining and quarrying — loading, stripping and rehabilitation on surface operations.
• Municipal and utility work — water, sewer and electrical reticulation.
• Demolition and site clearance — often with attachments.

Typical salary

Excavator operator pay depends on the industry, the site and whether you are employed directly or through a labour broker. Indeed South Africa reports an average of R12,677 a month, from 13 salaries reported, updated January 2026. Treat that as a midpoint — the sample is small.
